aaFun with a Purpose

Scouts have participated in Memorial Day celebrations since 1951 when a boy scout troop took it upon themselves to place flags at St. Louis military cemetery.  We in Pack 1 have a tradition of participation in Southborough's Heritage, Veterans and Memorial Day parades.  The boys will march with veterans and can participate in flag ceremonies. The Boys do need to wear their class A uniforms.

Heritage Day Parade - Columbus Day in October
For the Heritage parade the boys march from St Anne's to the Library. We meet at 9:30 and the parade will be over around 11:00. After the parade the boys will need to hang around long enough for photos and to get candy on the Library Steps

Veterans Day Parade - November 11th.
On Veterans Day the boy march from the community center to the All Wars Memorial (in front of the Pilgrim Church). We meet between 10:15 and 10:30 and the memorial ceremony is at the memorial at 11:00.

Memorial Day Flag Placement - Memorial Day Weekend
The flag placement is on the Friday at 6:00pm. The boys will help place Flags on the Veterans graves in the Rural Cemetery (Rt 85 across from Woodward). The boys need to wear their Class A uniform and walk not run. The Veterans will provide direction.

The Memorial Day Parade is that Monday.
We meet at 8:45 at the Marlboro Savings Bank at the corner of Main Street and Rt. 30. The procession moves down Main Street, left onto Route 85, then into Rural Cemetery.  From there, the veterans march back up towards the center of town and stop briefly at the old Burnett Cemetery, the cemetery next to Pilgrim (Revolutionary War veterans,) the Civil War Monument, and the All Wars Memorial.  At the Civil War monument, a student will recite The Gettysburg Address.  There is a 5 minute or so observance at each site followed by a 3-gun salute.  (loud!)  After all is said and done, Hoodsie Cups are given to the kids at the Community Center - - another long-standing Southborough tradition.

For the Webelos the parades count towards the Citizenship Pin and that is an option towards the Citizenship Achievement.
