When I started to look up Pack 1's history I ran into a problem. The earliest official date is December 1950 but this may not be the entire story. It turns out there was a fire at the local scout headquarters in Ashland in 1948. Many of the records were lost or damaged so the BSA re-chartered some of the local organizations in 1950. Pack 1 may be older or it may not.

I was able to find out a few fun tidbits. 1) Scouting in Southborough goes back to 1915 when Troop1 was formed. Making Troop 1 one of the oldest troops in the country and certainly the oldest in Massachusetts.

2) In 1930, Cub Scouting was formally launched, with 5,102 boys and 1,433 pack leaders in 243 packs registered during the first year. Ages 9- Wolf, 10- Bear, 11-Lion.

3) Pilgrim Church became Pack 1 and Troop 1's sponsor in 1966. Prior to that we met at St Mark's and did a scout skills demonstration every year for the town.

4) In 1967 they decided to allow younger boys to join Cub scouts. Lions were out and Webelos in. Ages 7-Tigers, 8-Wolf, 9-Bear, 10 and 11- Webelos.

5) Pack 1 has won Quality Unit and Path to Excellence awards almost every year the awards have existed.

We are almost 65 years old and going strong.
