The Pinewood Derby is one of the most popular events in Cub Scouting. The first Pinewood Derby was held in 1953 by Cub Scout Pack 280C of Manhattan Beach, California, and as of 1991 (Ref. 1992 BSA Retail Catalog) more than 81 million Pinewood Derby model car kits have been sold.
The purpose of the Pinewood Derby is to have fun, help the Cub Scout build a team relationship with their parent or helper, have fun, experience the sense of accomplishment and the excitement of competition, have fun, learn good sportsmanship, and to have fun. The model cars are made of wood to specified dimensions, created, carved, assembled, and decorated by Cub Scouts under the guidance of the parents or helpers. The cars are gravity powered and run down a special track. Additional details are in the Rules and Description
Our Pinewood is not only within our pack but between all three of the Southborough Packs. This year we are requiring a pre-registation of all racers. We need the participants name, name of the car, race category (Den) by Jan 19th. Racers can give me Jim Stewart the information at the January pack meeting, practice day or via email The boys were given a kit at the December pack meeting. If they didn't get one check with their den leader. If chipmunks or parents want to race they might need to get a car from the Boy Scout store on route 9. The Practice run is optional but it's also an excellent opportunity to check the weight of the cars and clearance. Racers can come and go anytime between 10 and 2. There is also an informal car building day at Wooden Toys and Crafts in Marlborough. Wooden Toys and crafts will cut out the cars on their band saws and then the boys can finish them there with the paints. Last year it was $3.00 for the cutting and $3.00 more for the paint and sandpaper.
